Ex-Pääkaupunki / Ex- Capital City

Lauantai ja matkahimot nousivat korkealle, matkakohteeksi valikoitui Coimbra. Linja-autoasemalle siis tie ja selvittämään hintoja.

Eli opetuksien jälkeen ei maksettukaan 18 € vaan 14.40 menopaluu matkasta Coimbraan. Matka kesti tunteroisen ja bussi oli siis näitä parempia 'Rede Expressos'-busseja eli paikallisia EB-busseja.

Coimbra on yksi suurimmista Portugalin opiskelijakaupungeista, opiskelijoita on yliopistossa noin 20 000 ja koko kaupungissa korkeakouluopiskelijoita 35 000. Täällä käytäisiin kuntavaalit teemalla "joka kolmas". Coimbra on siis ollut joskus muinoin Portugalin pääkaupunki ja yliopistokin on yksi maailman vanhimmista (ei muuten voita siltikään Padovaa). Kaupunki sijaitsee Mondego-joen varrella ja on kasvanut molemmin puolin jokea. Vanha kaupunki ja yliopistokampus sijaitsee mäen päällä joten saatiin nousta ylös alas koko päivän ajan melkeinpä.

Käveltiin muutama tunti pitkin joen vartta ja vähän shoppailtiin siinä ohessa. Ihania origameja oli tehty ilmeisesti koulussa ja nuoret opettelivat jolla-purjehduksen saloja. Ilma oli upean aurinkoinen ja oli niiin niin niin ihanaa. Sielu sai levätä.

Kävelimme tosiaan myös vanhaan kaupunkiin ja yliopistokampukselle. Lippu yliopistoon maksoi 5,50€ opiskelijakortilla mutta pääsimme käymään melko upeissa tiloissa. Vanhat rakennukset ja historia <3 Uskomattominta oli käydä yliopiston VANKILASSA, jonne vietiin huonosti käyttäytyviä opiskelijoita pitoon muutamaksi päiväksi. Vankila oli siis oikeasti vankila, huone oli kolkko 1,5m x 3m koppi. Joo ei tulisi mieleen tuhota kirjaston kirjoja, väittää opettajalle vastaan tai varastella. Vankilaan pääsi upeasta kullalla koristellusta kirjastosta, jossa mahdollisia sisään pääseviä ötököitä käy öisin syömässä lepakot!

Kirjastossa ollessamme ulkoa kaikui Gaudeamus Igitur, ei ehditty saada tietää miksi. Vanhassa kaupungissa näimme myös kahdet häät, toiset rikkaiden häät, jossa morsian ei pahemmin hymyillyt ja toiset vähän pienemmällä budjetilla ja morsian oli niin onnellinen. Hassu juttu oli myös paikalliset opiskelijat, niillä oli villakaavut päällä. Ruban sanojen mukaan "oikean elämän Harry Pottereita ja Hermioneja".

Saturday and travel fever! Therefore the road took us to Coimbra. At noon to the bus station and buying the tickets.

Keep in mind 1: Always buy two way ticket, it's cheaper
Keep in mind 2: Tell you're a student (we didn't even need to show any cards), you'll get discout.

So we payed the 14.40€ instead of 18€ and it took about one hour. We took these fancier busses "Rede Expressos". 

Coimbra is one of the biggest student cities in Portugal. There's around 20 000 student in the university and on total 35 000 bachelor or up level students. Coimbra has some time ago (like centuries) been the capital city of Portugal and the university is one of the oldest in the world (though doesn't win Padova, Italy). The city is located by the River Mondego and it has grown on both sides of the river. The old city and university campus is located on top of a huge hill so up and down we went.

At first though we were walking by the river and shopping at the same time too. There were some lovely origami made by school kids I suppose and there were also young kids learning how to sail. The weather was awesomely great and sunny and it was so so so great. My soul was resting.

 
So after river side walking it was time to go up the hill. We visited the university campus and the ticket was 5,50€ with a student card (in my case ESN card from last year :D). It was great, old buildings and history <3 The craziest place to visit was the university PRISON, a place where missbehaving students (destroying library books, poor class actions, stealing) were taken in the old days. The prison cell was about 1,5x3m rock room. Another weird fact was that the prison was underneath the cool library, which was almost totally coated with gold! And it's so regulated that the temperature is kept the same all the time and you there are bats flying inside every night to destroy the bugs!

While we were in the library we heard Gaudeamus Igitur from outside. Dunno why though. There were also two weddings in the old city. One with a lot of rich looking people and the bride wasn't really looking happy. The other one looked normal price and the bride was happy. Another funny thing was the local students, they were wearing woolen robe in the middle of sunshine. Ruba said they look just like from Harry Potter.
