Leiria

Leiria, on sekä kaupunki että (seutu)kunta. Portugalissa on 7 aluetta ja Leiria sijaitsee Pinhal Litoral osassa Região Centroa eli rannikon mäntyalueella Portugalin keskialueella. Keskialueen pääkaupunki on Coimbra ja muita kaupunkeja Leirian lisäksi ovat Aveiro, Viseu, Castelo Branco ja Guarda.

Leirian kaupungissa on reilut 50 000 asukasta ja koko Leirian kunnan alueella reilut 120 000. Väestöntiheys n. 120/km2.  Leirian seutukuntaan kuuluu useampia kuntia, mukaan lukien Marinha Grande, jossa työpaikkani sijaitsee.

Leirian historiallinen keskusta / Historic Centre of Leiria

Leirian nähtävyyksiä on keskellä kaupunkia oleva Leirian linna, jota osittain ympäröi vanha Leirian historiallinen keskusta.

Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa

Linnan toisella puolella löytyy jalkapallostadion, jossa on pelattu vuonna 2004 EM-jalkapallokisaotteluita. Leiriassa on viiden tiedekunnan yliopisto, joista keskusta-alueella sijaitsee teknillisen, kasvatustieteen sekä terveystieteiden tiedekunnat.

Ensimmäisten päivien aikana taivas oli sinisen kirkas, mutta sunnuntaina kaupungin ympärillä on syttynyt useita metsäpaloja, joista on noussut hurjasti savua taivaalle. Onpahan sitä myös tuhkaa tippunut vaatteillekin ulkona ollessa.

Historiallista keskustaa / Historic Centre

Leiria, is a city and a municipality. There are 7 regions in Portugal and Leiria is located in Pinhal Litoral subregion of Região Centroa (in Costal pineforest area of centrel portugal region). The capital city of the Região Centroa is Coimbra and other cities in the region are Aveiro, Viseu, Castelo Branco, Guarda and of course Leiria. There are around 50 000 citizens in the city of leiria  and in the whole municipality area around 120 000. The population density is about 120/km2. The research centre I'll work in is located in Marinha Grande, which is a city in Leiria district.

Rio Lis / Lis-joki / River Lis

The main attractions of Leiria are the castle partly surrounded by the historic centre. On the other side of the Castle is situated a (football)stadium, where some of the european championship games were held during 2004. In the Polytechnic institute of Leiria it's possible to stude several different fields. In the city centre area are located the faculties for technical, educational and health sciences.

Punainen aurinko merkkinä metsäpaloista / Sun red from the smoke

During the first days the sky was 'sky blue' but then several forest fires has started and the sky has been mainly grey from the smoke. The fires have been pretty near since some ash has fallen on me while walking and being outdoors.
